Fall ’06Fashion Flash Forward
Dear Fashion Aficionados:
We’re fresh from the Worth runway show this past weekend and can hardly contain our excitement; there were so many great pieces to give all our wardrobes that boost of energy needed for fall in the City. We know that sweaters, outerwear and boots are the last thing on your mind when you haven’t even had your summer vacation yet. However, we’re here to do the thinking for you, so you can go to the beach knowing you won’t miss out on a single fall fashion trend.
The 10 key trends for your Fall and Winter wardrobe:
1. The New Pants: Skinny (including Leggings) or Slouchy & Full
2. Longer Jackets & Tunics
3. Layered Knits
4. Capes
5. Fur, Fur & More Fur
6. Baroque Velvets, Lace, Brocade
7. Tartan & Plaid
8. Empire Dresses & Balloon Skirts
9. Patterned & Opaque Tights
10. Metallics
The BIGGEST NEWS this fall is the new proportion: skinny on the bottom, volume on the top, seen to its full affect on the Balenciaga runway. This silhouette change is most obvious with pants where the shape has changed dramatically. What’s happening is the low-rise bell-bottom is taking a back seat to the skinnier, higher waist pant. This year Worth introduces the “Melissa” in denim and light weight wool with a slightly higher rise than “Shakira” and a very straight leg that looks great tucked into boots or hitting long over heels or flats. This pant looks best when worn as a suit with a long jacket or more casually with a luxurious knit or suede tunic on top.
The other major silhouette is the slouchy, borrowed-from-the-boys looks of roomy trousers, blazers and cardigans. Worth’s “Gladys” pant fills this role in spades. Flat front, with a side zipper and fluid from hip to ankle, this pant is always office appropriate when worn with a pretty blouse or a luxe belt, bag or boot. Worth is about making all of us look our best, so if neither of these styles are for you, remember that Worth continues to offer classic favorites like “Thora”, “Chloe”, “Scarlett”, and “Charlotte” in new colors and fabrics.
Cozy, enveloping knits were all over the runway this season from Ralph Lauren to Hermes to yes, Worth. Layered and belted, they looked fantastic over pants, leggings, skirts and dresses. The sweater is the ultimate transition piece in September and October and can be worn over summer dresses paired with tights, or worn in place of a blazer with skirts and pants. Worth showed the most luxurious cashmeres, wools, cottons and silk/cotton blends in every silhouette from a knee-length, toggle-closure to cable one-shoulder tanks, capped sleeves and turtlenecks.
Other great transitional pieces are the cape, the traditional British trench, and of course our lightweight, luxurious leathers and suedes sourced from the finest Italian mills. These pieces, as well as blazers, are sporting military details like stand-up collars, breast pockets and epaulets. Skirts, also the perfect transitional item, shared the common thread of movement. Whether knee length or mid-calf, whether cotton crochets, wool, taffeta, or plaid, they were fluid and slightly flared to slim, but not restrict the body. They looked fantastic with knee-high and ankle boots.
The unexpected mix of daytime tweed with nighttime velvet, brocade and lace were another subtle trend shown on the Worth runway. Look for gold thread woven into boucle, chiffon peaking from panels of our trumpet skirt, and the less subtle, but wear-with-everything quilted linen coat in 18-karat gold. And of course, don’t forget the ultimate luxury: fur cuffs and wraps added to utilitarian sweaters and coats.
